The Skills And Qualities You Should Have To Work With Children

The truth is, working with children is very different from working with grown adults. To add to that, working with younger kids is very different from working with much older kids. Thus, if you have already put your mind to working with kids no matter if you are looking to be a teacher at a school, or nanny with Payroll for Nannies. or anything else, here are some of the skills you will need to have.

1. Have Patience

More than anything, you will need to exhibit patience. Keep in mind, children are nothing like adults. They are going to be processing things very differently from adults and being able to bridge the gap between what you are talking about and what you know to what they understand and know can be frustrating, to say the last. Thus, be prepared to repeat yourself time and time again. You will need to explain things repeatedly. You will have to deal with a lot of distractions and a lot of things that take their focus away. You will need to have a lot of patience that you can tap into in order to keep yourself from getting overly frustrated.

2. The Ability To Hide Frustration

A lot of kids are going to be very perceptive. They can pick up things about your demeanour. Because of this, you need to be able to hide your frustration and exhaustion. While you don’t necessarily need to exhibit feelings of happiness all of the time, you don’t want to do things that can demoralise them or cause them stress. Try to work on your ability to hide your true emotions of boredom, exhaustion, or frustration.

3. The Ability To Keep Calm

Having the ability to keep calm even when things are out of control is important. Kids are going to end up freaking out if they see adults doing the same. This can end up causing a stressful situation to get even worse. Thus, you want to practice on keeping calm in emergency situations or in situations where you otherwise wouldn’t keep calm. Working with children in large groups means you need to be able to maintain a calm presence at all times. Your kids are going to look to you to see how they should react to things.

4. Exceptional Communication

Many adults assume they need to be effective at ‘dumbing down’ information they are trying to get across. This is a misconception that can lead you the wrong way. There is a very big difference between ‘dumbing things down’ versus using specifically related examples for children to understand. Children learn best when they are relayed examples and stories that illustrate ideas. Therefore, you want to try to relate things to situations they are able to understand when you are explaining concepts and ideas.

5. Showcase Enthusiasm

You will need to enjoy spending time with kids if you want to work with them with success. Kids will know when you aren’t comfortable and they are likely going to exploit any discomfort you are feeling. You will need to showcase enthusiasm for the things that you are teaching if you want them to display the same level back.

These are just some of the different skills and qualities that you will need to master if you want to work with children. A lot of the technical skills required actually fall under one of these traits you need to have.
